Israel Corp. acquired a controlling interest of ORL, one of Israel's largest industrial companies, from the Israeli Government in 2007 for $706 million in line with its strategy to expand its energy portfolio and leverage its experience in transforming privatized companies.
ORL's Nelson Complexity is among the highest in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The company benefits from state-of-the-art facilities, first-rate engineering capabilities and integrated operations, and consistently outperformed benchmark average Mediterranean Urals cracking margins. ORL also established itself as an early leader in the adoption and manufacturing of Euro IV- and Euro V-compliant products.
ORL’s refinery is integrated with the operations of its subsidiaries Carmel Olefins Ltd., which produces polymers for Israel’s plastics industry, and Gadiv Petrochemical Industries Ltd., one of the major producers of aromatics in the Mediterranean region and one of Israel's largest petrochemical companies.
ORL's value creation strategy includes an aggressive $1.1 billion five-year strategic investment plan, which aims to significantly expand the Company's existing operations and position it to address new global opportunities. The plan includes upgrading its refining capabilities and expanding into new energy and petrochemical markets. The investment plan also includes establishing a Hydrocracker to improve the refinery’s diesel and jet fuel yields. This is also expected to increase ORL's Nelson “Complexity” from its current 7.4 to around 9. The company is also upgrading its facilities to achieve greater operating efficiency and enhance its environmental profile.
ORL is positioned to benefit from the region’s rising demand for refined products, as it holds a dominant position in the Israeli energy market and has access to sources of crude supply and fast-growing product markets.
